Do you need an alternative to Microsoft office?  Many people cannot afford Microsoft office, but need to use it for work or school.  Microsoft is finally offering an office starter pack free on new computers with a limited functioning word and excel programs.  If you have an older computer, you are not eligible to use the office starter pack.  There is an alternative, its open office from openoffice.org.  It has 5 programs for all of your office needs. 

• Writer which is similar to Word
• Calc which is similar to excel
• Impress which is similar to Power Point
• Draw for art and manipulation
• Base for databases

You can use these programs with office as well, documents created in Microsoft office or openoffice can be read or changed in either software so you can communicate with every at the office using Microsoft office if your using openoffice!  Not all functions are the same, but basic communication is easy.
